Description

The Digitron IN-12A / IN-12B is a classic Nixie display (discharge tube) designed to
display digits 0–9 with a characteristic warm orange glow. It is a special
type of discharge tube filled with a mixture of gases in which a glow discharge burns. From this point of view,
the digitron can be considered a special type of glow tube, where the cathodes are shaped
into individual characters (digits).

There are several cathodes (for individual digits) and one
common anode in the form of a grid in a single glass bulb. When high voltage is applied to the selected cathode,
the corresponding digit lights up. The glass bulbs of many digitorons, including the
IN-12 series, are equipped with a colour filter (red coating) that improves
contrast and suppresses parasitic light.

Difference between IN-12A and IN-12B

  • IN-12A –
displays only digits 0–9, without a decimal point
  • IN-12B –
displays digits 0–9 and includes a decimal point

Both variants are fully compatible in terms of use and connection and
differ only in the presence of a decimal point.

Important technical note

A protective resistor must always be connected to the common anode to limit
the current. Without this resistor, an electric arc could form between
the electrodes, which would destroy the digitron or even the entire connected circuit.

Typical use

  • Nixie
    clocks
  • Measuring and
    display instruments
  • Counters
    and indicators
  • DIY, retro
    and designer electronic projects

Warning: Digitrons operate at high voltages (typically around 170–200 V DC).
They are intended for users with basic knowledge of electronics and working with high
voltages.
